On the counter
The seafood is weighed in front of you and priced on the day. Around it, a kitchen that knows its steaks too.
How to eat the beasts
Reviewers keep thanking the staff for explaining the platter. Four steps, no shame in asking.
Step 01
Point at what looks good on the ice. It's weighed and priced on the day.
Step 02
Use the wooden mallet gently, then pull the meat out with the pick.
Step 03
Hold the foot, twist the shell and pull: the sweet bit slides out.
Step 04
The sapateira's dressing is for the bread. Finish with a cold beer.
The house
On a pedestrian street near the river, Marisqueira de Algés is where people from Algés, Oeiras and Lisbon go for seafood without the tourist markup. Visitors who find it call it a hidden gem, mostly because the tables around them are full of Portuguese families.
The room was renovated years ago and now seats more of them. What never changed is the counter of fresh shellfish, the platters that need two hands and a floor team that translates the Portuguese-only menu, picks the wine and explains how to eat what arrives.
